Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire
I love McGuire’s other series, with Toby Daye, so when this book came out I immediately jumped on it.
Discount Armageddon
I honestly really think Seanan McGuire (/Mira Grant) is my current favorite author. I thought that before this book, but this book did not change that thought at all.
Verity Price is a good kid. She’s an urban fantasy heroine but she’s got family (which is really pretty unusual if the urban fantasy genre in general is surveyed). They don’t show up directly in this book, but she’s able to contact them by phone or email, the same as most young adults who have moved away from home and are pursuing their interests in a new city. Verity works as a waitress in a strip club to make ends meet, but she’s in New York City to pursue dancing, because she wants to be a ballroom dancer (she is one, but she can’t earn the money doing it).
She’s also there to continue her family’s work, which is cryptozoology. As such she ends up having adventures she’d rather not pick because she’d rather dance, and she meets a wide variety of people who are born with non-human traits.
The adventure is good. There are some nice twists I wasn’t expecting. McGuire is good at that, very good. There’s athleticism and calling for help and minor injuries and a bit of romance with her possibly-enemy possibly-ally Dominic. That’s one of my most favorite types of relationships, when the other guy might really not be on your side but you have to team up to get some common goal done, and as a result both people are a little changed.
This world has a lot going for it, I think. There’s a lot of potential investigation, multiple built in antagonists of various types, and Verity is good at what she does and comfortable with herself. I am definitely on board for the second book.
